Chasing Perfection, or Cherishing the Present?

Posted on Apr 18th, 2008 by Jamie : Sophia's Trickster-Muse Jamie

Photo_021607_villagemktroses What are we really doing, and what are we really robbing ourselves and others of, when we hold an image of 'the ideal', of 'perfection', that time after time real people, circumstances, or even we our selves do not -- and cannot -- meet?

We all do that, or have done that, in various ways. Holding a rigid image of perfection or an ideal, and then projecting that exacting standard out onto the people and situations of our lives, and measuring them one against the other. Of course, the 'real' always fails to meet the unmeetable expectation.

Why?

Wonderful! Exactly what I needed to hear today. I loved what your spiritual teacher said, “The opportunity is really about asking, 'Can I love and cherish what's right in front of me – do I choose to work with and appreciate this wonderful, flowering gift in the present – or do I distract myself with the illusion that there is something better over my shoulder, the allure of finding better treasure in the next field?'”

Great Jamie! I deeply appreciate your reminder to be IN the beauty NOW, knowing that this is what will lead me to experience more and more of the 'ideal' – one moment at a time. Powerful writing from you as usual – I would suspect its based on your own recent personal experiences – Bless You!

Thank you both for visiting and sharing your thoughts. Mark, I definitely loved that gem of wisdom, too, and so beautifully shared. Moonsong, yes, for every artist, writers included, each work has a seed of personal experience and gnosis that seems fed by themes observed or overheard from those around us – that was the case for me with this post. When a theme like that arrives, it incubates and then Spirit writes through!

Blessings and joy to each of you!

Love,
Jamie

Hi Jamie!  There has been quite a few ups and downs in my life past couple of years, yet I have found a way to rise with the tide by counting my blessings. My garden is my santuary and paradise now and i feel the gift of joy all around me. The 'ideal' makes us more controlling and resistant instead of observing, allowing and accepting the present. Yet the paradox is that change is easier when we are fully open and connected to the present.
I am loving this paradox. Thanks for your being and open expression.

Blessings for joy~
